MECH2100 – Machine Element Design 58.6

I really disliked this course.

Hal Gurgenci took it the semester I did it, and I just found him to be a bad course coordinator. Didn't really know what he wanted from the students, confusing lectures, and also belittled me on the blackboard discussion board when I asked a question.

The tutors also didn't seem to know what to tell us sometimes and then gave us really bad marks.

Online quizzes were not very fun. Course content is difficult. The design question on the final exam is a nightmare.

MECH2100 – Machine Element Design 97.1

I found MECH2100 to be a very enjoyable course that teaches you a lot of useful content and then gets you to apply it. The course content builds upon MECH2300 and largely focuses on the forces, stresses etc. and applies them to designing practical applications like welding, gears, shafts, bolts, bearings etc.

The course is well structured with weekly quizzes that test you on the content you learn each week, and then there are two large design projects which are done in groups of nine. These require you to apply the knowledge you've gained to effectively design a structure, and then a gear box.

The content was enjoyable, and applying it in the design projects was enjoyable. The text book is a must have for the open book final, and is very useful for the quizzes and the design projects.
