MICR3003 – Molecular Microbiology 88.3

So it only has two lectures a week, but the practicals are slightly harder than the other courses around the same level (MICR3002, etc).

All the lecturers are top class. When I did it (Sem. 1, 2015) Jack Wang, James Fraser, U. Kappler and Nick West lectured the 4 modules. James Fraser (BIOL2202) is top class as is Jack Wang (MICR2000). Nick West's lectures did overlap with some of the content in MICR2000, which can help somewhat.

The prac stream has 2 parts: (a) First half of the semester = characterizing genes to be used in vaccines. Need to write a report on it; (b) Second half of semester = Beer and Biofuels. I didn't enjoy this much. Requires planning as a group outside lab time, and the genomics is thrust upon you with very little explanation. Do go and ask your tutor the basics so you can get an understanding on how the program (CLC Genomics Workbench 8) works and what it is actually telling you. You will need to work on it in the ILC labs (bldg 69) while fitting in among other scheduled classes in there. You will also require a storage device to save all your progress (500 GB HD was what I used).

Once the pracs are over the final is not too bad (less content that the other 3rd year courses you do). My year the exams changed giving you a choice of 1 out of 2 questions for the SAQ. Only a few MCQ. James Fraser can be coaxed to give you SAQ exam question hints during one 'unrecorded' lecture. These were paramount to SWOTVAC study.

Otherwise interesting course. Do it! JUST. DO IT! (ft. Shia LaBeouf)
