PARA3002 – Biomedical Parasitology 84.4

One of the best courses offered for a BSc. A combination of fascinating lecture content, engaging lecturers and great hands-on practicals. Lecture content is often quite gory (expect to see a few pictures of patients with sickening quantities of parasitic worms coming out their bum) and is always entertaining. The course covers major parasites (such as malaria, paralysis ticks and schistosoma worms) to very obscure parasites which are covered because they have some weird and often amazing quirk (the way Dioctophyme renale only lives in one kidney, or Ctenocephalides felis' legs).

The course is about as difficult as a second year course as there is no prerequisite knowledge (you do not need MICR2000 or any other biology subject) and is often a joy to study for due to the interesting nature of the content. In 2013 Sem 2, 80% of the course was assessed by final exam (divided into a 60% final and a 20% practical exam which involved identifying different parasites under a microscope).

Strongly recommended for anyone with an elective or who is studying Microbiology.

PARA3002 – Biomedical Parasitology 83.0

PARA3002 is the only parasitology course available in undergraduate science. It's a 3rd year course but the difficulty is more similar to 2nd year as there is very little pre-requisite knowledge. The course content is very broad, with lots of detail (gory and fascinating) available in lectures but tested to a much lower level than is taught. I took PARA3002 as an elective, unrelated to my major, I got a good mark, learnt a bunch about parasites and it was a fun course. I highly recommend it.
