PSYC4121 – The Scientist-Practitioner Model 25.7

Possibly the worst course I have undertaken in Psychology at UQ. The course coordinator threw a fit when people weren't interested in the content and did not turn up. Instead of asking us how to improve or what we expect, her solution...take the recordings away and force people to listen. Attendance did not improve nor did the mood towards her and the course.

Some of the stories you had to listen to as people spoke about how they felt was some of the worst pop media crap I've had to sit through.

Some guest speakers were quite engaging, but that did not mean what they said was useful. I understand what they were trying to do based on the summary of the course but that failed miserably. I would not recommend this course if it stays under its current content and layout.

PSYC4121 – The Scientist-Practitioner Model 29.1

Worst piece of shit course I've ever been forced to take. Brace yourself for 13 weeks of absolute bullshit. You'll be forced to memorise factually incorrect nonsense else fail Honours in Psychology (e.g., left- vs. right-brain, limbic resonance, etc.). You'll be expected to discuss the clinical implications of your Honours research, even if has no relevance to clinical psychology. You'll have to hear about why clinical psychology really ought to be supported by evidence, and poorly reasoned arguments to support this common sense claim. You'll be forced to try to find assessable content in someone's stories about their trips overseas. You'll be forced to accept that blogs are better empirical evidence than animal models. You'll also be forced to re-sit lectures on third-year statistics and measurement; these were actually the most enjoyable lectures. Essentially, you'll want to pull your teeth out and jam them in the eyes of most presenters.

I learned two things in this course:
First, some members of faculty literally believe the brain is split into left, right, top, and bottom, with each section doing specific jobs. If you believe this, you should not be a tenured academic and lecturer.
Second, clinical psychology is an absolute joke. Where studies have been conducted, they've been conducted incredibly poorly (e.g., without control groups/treatments, with inappropriate statistical comparisons, often with circular logic, etc.). You're as well of, if not better, just going for a walk, or patting a dog.
