MATH2010 – Analysis of Ordinary Differential Equations 84.7

This course was very easy. It is only one unit and only two topics are really covered in it:

- Analyzing 2nd order ODEs as systems of first order ODEs and plotting phase portraits
- Laplace transforms and their application to solving ODEs

If you pay attention, due the tutes and assignments, and study for the exam, this course should be an easy 6 or a 7.

There's not much else to say.

In terms of the content, I'm not sure if analysis of phase portraits will be useful for me, but the introduction to the Laplace Transform will definitely be essential to me becoming an Electrical Engineer.

NOTE: I actually took this in 2018, not 2017 - but there's no option for 2017.

MATH2010 – Analysis of Ordinary Differential Equations 85.0

I took 2010 earlier this year.
The content you need not fear.
It's not all that bad.
In fact, I'm quite glad -
Both content and teaching were clear.

You start with ODEs and phase space.
Though memories of 2000 you ought erase.
No characteristic equation,
You'll note with elation,
Instead using determinants and the trace.

To do this, you need to create
A matrix, and don't you wait!
This ODE you must solve,
And all your worries, absolve,
With a solution that's totally great!

Granted, it's a little dry...
Linear algebra ain't my slice of pie.
But you draw a pretty graph,
And with quite a laugh,
You'll know the meaning of dx/dy!

It gets drier still, I'm afraid...
Through Laplace transforms now you must wade.
I hear they're useful
But I'm feeling blue, still -
A practical use, I've not yet made.

That said, the lecturer was lovely,
Both educated and bubbly.
If you get Cathy
(who should be called 'Mathy'!)
Count yourself extremely lucky!

The exam was fairly tough
But I didn't study enough,
Missed many lectures,
And to complete the trifecta,
Took four other subjects - bit rough!

I don't know how to continue to phrase,
All my comments and praise,
The math's a little dull,
But it's taught very well,
I'll leave it there. Bye now, happy days!

Positives
  • Fantastic lecturer who runs around the stage in sheer excitement (I only exaggerate a little)
  • Ends halfway through semester - spend your spare time getting plastered
  • Didn't get away with being a slack bastard
Negatives
  • I'm never writing a limerick again, that took so bloody long
  • I really don't like linear algebra
  • Didn't get away with being a slack bastard
