PSYC3102 – Psychopathology 35.3

Psychopathology itself is such an interesting and engaging topic. This course however delivers it in such awful way.

My biggest complaint is the reliance on the texbook. Neither the course coordinator or tutors encouraged anyone to read it throughout the semester, and instead all the tutorial time was dedicated to the assignment. Yet, the majority of the end of semester exam (worth 50%) was derived from the textbook.

The staff were also very unapproachable, both the lecturer and my tutor seemed really annoyed about student emails. My tutor specifically went out of her way to list a bunch of extra rules we had to follow if we wanted to email her, which gave off the impression that she'd rather us not email her at all.

(Course completed in semester 1 2018)

Is the textbook necessary?

100%

Positives
  • Don't have to turn up to lectures
  • Content is interested regardless of how its taught
  • Lived experience seminars were really interesting
Negatives
  • Compulsory Textbook which most of the exam questions are derived from
  • Dr Cassandra Tellgen clearly only turned up for a paycheck and did not care about students
  • Subjectivity was promoted, but the opinions of the tutors and lecturers were used as a marking criteria

PSYC3102 – Psychopathology 96.4

The course was interesting, and I generally liked completing it. I didn't feel too bad, and the content changes every week. After a few weeks you can sort of predict exactly what the lecturer is going to talk about, as he brings up the same topics for different disorders/diseases. The assignment was a lot harder than anticipated. When going through it in tutorials, it seems easy. But getting marks back, and marks got deducted for very minor things. Either way, the course was pretty easy. The exam is very easy if you keep up to date every week.

PSYC3102 – Psychopathology 83.3

The course is fascinating, though a lot of work (especially when taking it a the same time as PSYC3010 - coinciding assignment dates).
Unfortunately the new lecture (Margaret) is awful. She drones on, unable to pronounce or explain what she is reading off he slides, making the 2hr content portion of the lectures feel like the biggest waste of time.
The 3rd hour which is the guest speaker lecture, though, is the most valuable section of my entire psychology degree. Hearing the lived experiences of people with these mental disorders is utterly fascinating.

Tip: The entire textbook is examinable, and the slides are taken (word-for-word) from the textbook. So just buy that and read it and only bother with the last hour of the lecture instead of being bored for the first two!
