MATH2001 – Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra 61.7

Hm this course is pretty tough.

Doesn’t let me say when but I did it in the summer semester 2019.

One plus is you don’t even need to turn up to lectures just watch them online seriously no need. Tutorials are only an hour so not too bad.

Course content wise it’s well more difficult than math1052 which I did. Vector analysis will creep up on you and fuck you over. Otherwise honestly it’s just pretty challenging. The mini tests are difficult so yeah you’ll have to put in some serious time for those.

The exam too is much tougher than those tests so prepare. Understand the content and just keep doing practise exams.

Linear algebra stuff is tricky but all those proofs are unnecessary and you really only need it for everything except the final exam. It is tested in the final exam just not more than maybe a third at absolute most (more like 10-15%)

Learn all vector calculus stuff and just know how to do it. Even just knowing the basic procedure gets you marks.

MATH2001 – Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra 77.3

This course is set out in two halves the same as MATH2000, plus extra contact lectures.
The first half of the course is ODEs and multivariable integral calculus lectured by Jorgen Rasmussen
The second half is vector calculus and linear algebra by Mark Gould.
Additionally, the contact classes are lectured by Jorgen.

Personally, I prefer Jorgen for the 2000 content because he helps to keep it interesting an enjoys giving little examples and physical analogies to help you understand while he lectures. Although, this unfortunately helps little for the 2001 contact material.

As for the contact material, there is no workbook at the start of the semester, and individual worksheet chapters are released as you progress, which is a real pain if you forget to print them off and bring them to the lecture. Additionally, most of the contact time is used to prove properties or formulas. You do need to do this yourself, but it is only a small part of the assessment.

The tutorials and assessment were pretty standard for a math course. A fairly beefy assignment (that is worth relatively little) is due every second week. Tutorial quizzes every other second week.
Exam was worth like 70%(?) of the course grade and consisted of 12 questions over 2 hours. If you know exactly what you are doing, you should be able to finish it in time, but if you are unsure about anything, you will not have time.
My tutor was nice, but, again, was a standard math tutor. Whenever I asked him questions he always got distracted telling me lots of details that I didn't need to know, and he didn't know how to explain things modularly or in a way that aids understanding.

I recommend doing the tutorial worksheets and writing your own formula book. Make sure you understand the formulas well. Pretty much everything you need for the contact material are printed in text just above the boxes to fill out. Use Khan Academy to actually teach you the contact material.

MATH2001 – Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra 86.4

I feel the course had the same amount of difficulty as when you take MATH1051/1052 for the first time. The 2001 contact hours were boring, most of it was just watching proofs being completed which I understand was for our further understanding of 2001 content but it is possible to do without it.
Anthony admitted he made the midsem too easy but I think he compensated by increasing the difficulty of the final exam. The questions in the final were far more difficult than the assignment questions and past exams, it was an unpleasant surprise.

MATH2001 – Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra 75.0

MATH2001 has the same course content as MATH2000 plus the contact classes. It's essentially divided into 3 sections with different lecturers - ODEs and iterated integrals taught by Yao-ban, vector calculus and linear algebra by Phil and the contact content by Tony. The course content was really interesting and enjoyable (if you're into math) and the main lectures were delivered and explained really well. I never needed to refer to the textbook - the lecture slides and workbook had everything. The assignments were always up very early - even before you handed in the last assignment. Tutors were good help and facebook groups are very valuable.

Now the negatives: the contact classes which separates MATH2001 from MATH2000 were poorly structured. It's delivered without powerpoints or a workbook which is fine, Phil just explains and writes down the concepts, proofs, etc. However its extremely fast paced, you just blindly copy whats written and have no time to think about what it means or whats being said at all. It seems like a lot of the content is glossed over and you only learn it when appears in an assignment. The 'revision' class held for content material before the midsemester was just repeating exactly what was said in the contacts. The material is actually really relevant and interesting to the main bulk of the course but you don't realise it - it almost seems like a separate course.

Overall I enjoyed the course and I would take it again, I hope the contact classes are revised for future offerings and integrated into the rest of the course much more smoothly.

Also Yao-ban is a child genius so his midsemester was insane.
