MECH3750 – Engineering Analysis II 60.9

Are you taking this course because you excelled in MECH2700? Do you feel that you're a Python ace? Well buckle up, kiddo. This subject follows on from MECH2700 and it's amped up to another level. It is one of the most challenging courses in the degree. If you are an Aerospace student, there is no dodging this nuclear tipped bullet, otherwise you must proceed with caution!

The content is hard but so is the whole of the third year. Some concepts are a bit hard to grasp and their applications can be very niche at times but if you know how to do them, they are very handy. PDEs for example were hard but they have lots of applications for multivariable problems. A lot of these numerical methods can be applied to your other subjects too so if you plan on taking subjects which rely heavily on coding up numerical models, this is a subject for you.

The course itself was structured okay. There is reasonable time to do the assignments and logbooks and extensions were granted were it was reasonable to do so. Tutorials and Practicals in the form of tute sheets and assignment sessions are a must to go to as it will give you plenty of content to sink your teeth into.

The main assignments are straight up tedious. Never have I felt so hopeless in doing them because it is literally an assignment where you can stare at it all day and get nowhere. Doing the tutorials does help but I felt there needed to be a couple of more tutors to really address the questions of the students. They take up an unbelievable amount of time and, in the hardest semester of the degree, time is a precious commodity.

Overall, you have to put in far more effort than 2700 to get the grades you want for 3750, but it can be rewarding.

MECH3750 – Engineering Analysis II 78.6

This is one of my favourite courses I have studied in Mechanical Engineering. I took it as an elective (however it is compulsory for aerospace majors) and am very glad I took it.
It's super interesting, and if you are interested in coding/ numerical methods, it's great.
I also think it just helps generally with all other courses, being given an extra chance to code and it also teaches you good problem solving skills.

It was an extremely difficult course though. They changed it a bit the year I took it, the final exam was a very different format to previous years. A lot of students failed or got very low marks due to the final. So be prepared for some hard work, big exam preparation, but if you are interested in the content then I encourage students to take it.

Some of the tutorial solutions could have been presented a little nicer or in more depth. Some lectures a little hard to understand. The first assignment was also quite challenging. The workbook extracts are a good way to learn, I think they are removing them from the course though.

MECH3750 – Engineering Analysis II 13.3

Worst course I've ever done (and that's saying a lot). 3 lecturers.
1 was rude and dismissive.
1 had favourites in the class and ignored everyone else.
1 presented lecture notes that looked like his dog scribbled them. Impossible to study.

One of the assignments did not reflect content taught and was too hard (from the mouths of the tutors). I went to every lecture and tutorial and prac class and couldn't get any help from anyone.

Regularly had to wait half an hour in tutorials for a tutor, and often got false information from them. I lost marks on some workbook extracts because I did what a tutor explicitly told me to do, but that wasn't what I was supposed to do.

Horrific waste of time and effort.

MECH3750 – Engineering Analysis II 92.9

I feel this was a very good course, possibly one of the best I have taken under the mechanical engineering curriculum. The information was well taught and the lecturers / tutors very approachable.

The only suggest I would make would be to tidy up the blackboard site a little more, the tutorials particularly painful to look through during exam study when trying to find solutions. Lecture notes started off quite well, but for some topics (I think Fourier transforms may have been one), the power point uploaded was a little difficult to study. Although this is a very minor point!

One other thing would be the workbook entries, I liked the idea of this. But occasionally one would pop up that was very time consuming and felt more like an assignment in itself. But all in all I found these to be quite a good learning tool.

It is very helpful but not 100% necessary - personally I could only attend half due to work schedules

Excellent course, although a more even weighting of semester content to the final would be nice. Make the semester content 45% of the total, rather than 35%, and it would be perfect.

Also, figure out how to use blackboard better. You can put the notes and lecture recordings into subfolders of the learning resources or just dump them on the level (ie don't have a floating lecture ntes folder). You could, in fact, have tutorials, software, and reading materials folders as subfolders here as well.
