BIOL3211 – Marine Invertebrates 84.3

This has been the best course I have done in my entire degree! Bernie and Sandie Degnan are absolutely fabulous - they are both so passionate about what they teach and have a genuine interest in the students and how they are travelling throughout the semester. The mid-sem exam, while open-book, was still pretty tough just with the complexity of answers that are expected. But the practical classes for this course are the best you will ever take at UQ if you're interested in marine invertebrates. The major assessment piece is the online webpage, and it seems a little daunting at first but it was actually a really fun and interesting assignment. You go at your own pace and choose your own topic (within the framework obviously), but the lecturers (Sandie and Bernie) and the tutors are extremely helpful. Would absolutely recommend this course to marine major students! If I could take it again I would in a heartbeat.

Is lecture attendance necessary?

Not necessarily, but definitely keep up to date on lecture content. And don\'t miss the workshop class/es! They are extremely useful for the mid semester exam in particular

Is the textbook necessary?

Yes. I personally find textbooks very helpful, plus there was an open-book mid-sem exam so it can come in handy with that and for the assignment

Positives
  • Lecturers are great
  • Practicals are really enjoyable
Negatives
  • There is a bit of content, but if you keep up to date with lectures and pracs it is easily manageable
