A great course and easy to score a 7 as long as you attend the tutes, PASS and finish the game (you get an easy 20% just for completing it). Marco made his lectures far more complicated than it really was which is why I only attended the first 4 lectures. If you have any questions, I highly recommend you to head to the consult. The tutors are more than happy to help go over economic concepts and Playconomics (the game itself). We had a mid-sem, an in-class test, the game, and a final exam as part of the assessment. The game comes with an online interactive textbook which I found to be useful when it came to explaining graphs. Also, spend some time doing past year questions (for the semester that Marco taught) just before the final exam. The questions were similar. I scored 44/50.

I had Marco Faravelli - a cool Italian dude who likes to play rock and roll classics during the mid lecture break, as well as calling people out for daring to use phones while he sips on a can of coke.
If you've done Math B in high school, the mathematics involved in this course will be no issue; it's literally reading graphs and rearranging some pretty intuitive equations. The only challenge with this course is the tutorial quiz, which for some reason is the same weighting as the mid semester exam, despite being significantly more difficult and with more time constraint. You shoud be in good stead if you go to your tutorials and PASS classes. Tutorials are helpful with being more familiar with the style of question you will get on your mid semester exam and tutorial quiz, however PASS classes are more for you to better understand the actual topics.
You also have to buy a game which comes with the course textbook. The game is an okay tool to learn from, however I find that the online textbook with the included videos work as a perfect substitute for lectures. Sometimes I found myself skipping lectures and watching the videos from the textbook instead because they were so much more succinct and informative.
As for myself, I aced the midsem, got caught off guard by the tutorial quiz, fully completed the game and nearly aced the final (50 MCQ), walking away with a 7 for the course. Marco is a good lecturer, however lectures weren't that enjoyable for me because I had to remind myself some people taking the course haven't done Math B in high school, and up to 10 minutes of the lecture could be used to explain to these students how to read a graph, or how an equation was derived. Pretty often, the lectures didnt last the full 2 hours they are scheduled for.

Perhaps if your mathematical background doesnt include High School Math B.
Yes, because it comes with the game you purchase for this course. I found it better than lectures depending on the topic at hand.
A very easy 7. It's high school economics.
20% of your mark is completing a long but easy sims-type game (with Marco).
Mid-sem worth 20% but was only 3 questions all from tutorials, or very similar.
The in class test following the mid sem in week 10 is the hardest, as you get less time for more content than the mid-sem. Still got a 7 and only studied the night before.
I passed with a 5 before even completing the final.
The final is free marks - 50 MCQ taken from past papers. Got a 7 again by completing 1 past paper and reading lecture slides for the first time on the way to the exam. Expect to leave after 60 minutes.

Overall a very well run and informative course. Lecture materials were directly relevant and the lecturer (Carl Sherwood) made sure to keep everyone engaged with applicable workings and examples. Tutorials were also directly related to exam content, while PASS was there to simply explain the concepts in the Tutorials.
This was also the first semester to introduce online quizzes (CMLs). These are an excellent and essential way to be prepared for the exams and to make sure you don't fall behind. Make sure you don't fall more than 2-3 weeks behind, otherwise it may be difficult to catch up. Course content is actually very simple if you have basic mathematical knowledge (Engineers will love this course, a lot of the tutors are actually Engineering students).
No real need for the textbook, just make sure to attend Tutorials and PASS weekly. I only physically attended 2 or 3 lectures, but always watched them before the next week's tutorials or pass. An excellent and informative course, anyone should be able to get a high mark provided you just attend.

It is reasonably easy course to undertake. It's one of the compulsory subject for students doing BBusMan, BComm and you should all take this in first two semesters.

I had Carl Sherwood for this course. Super easy, attended the first lecture, realised it was a waste of time and didn't go again. Didn't attend a lecture after that, not a single tutorial or PASS section. Listened to about 10/13 of the recordings online (Sherwood is an amazing lecturer!!) and got a 7. Just read the slides and you'll be fine, listen to them if you have Sherwood because he is very interesting. (I recommend x2 speed though, save yourself some time).
Need super basic mathematics for elasticity workings.. that's probably it. If you've got a spare elective and can't decide between Macro and this, choose this.

Dr. Marco Faravelli has been one of my most entertaining and engaging lecturers at UQ. This course is extremely difficult if you have done maths A or struggled in maths B however, the slides are super helpful and the pass classes are appropriately named. Take full advantage of any additional help available.

This course is very difficult. VERY. If you did Maths A in high school, please be aware that there is a high degree of assumed prior knowledge in terms of maths and graphing skills - this makes it hard to study as you need to learn the math first then learn the content. Assessment was weighted extremely highly in the final exam with tiny percentages awarded to painstakingly long tasks.
On a good note though, the lectures and lecture slides were amazing - so well written, very informative and so so so so helpful when trying to study for the final exam. The lecturer was fantastic at explaining content, the only thing was that the course had sooooo much content to learn you just feel like you're always one step behind what they're teaching.
Please, please, please do not miss a lecture because if you do, you'll fall behind so quickly its not funny. Same goes for the tutorials - just go to them - don't even contemplate skipping them because you'll likely fail the course.
Overall, horribly hard course, time consuming and ridiculously weighted assessment (only med sem and final, stuff one up and you'll likely fail the course) but if you study you can do moderately well.

Yes, absolutely
Mid semester exam was ALL multiple choice. A,B,C would be individual answers than 'D' would say "Only A & C", then 'E' would say "Only B & C" etc.
Final exam was "fill in the blanks". This is incredibly easy, no consequential marking as they don't mark your workings. One mistake at the start of the questions and 15-20% of the exam marks are gone straight. Do this twice in the exam and you've taken your grade from a HD to a C. The lecturers excuse of the volume of students is lazy to say the least particularly when the lecturer emphasised the importance of workings during the lectures.
PASS decent, tutorials average.
If you are taking an elective, please choose ECON1020, but be aware, when KK takes the course, 80% of the total course is MCQs.
Best Moment of the Course: lecturer keeping his microphone turned on and hearing other students "problems"

Be afraid. Be very very afraid. Getting a good mark in this class is not as easy as you think. For some, it may be difficult to pass at all. This isn't because of the content you learn (enough practise and it starts to get easier), or the algebra you haven't used since class in high school (thank god for Khan Academy)... Its the assessment.
Mid-sem 35%
Final exam 65%
It's scary. Fail one and its difficult to redeem yourself in the other. The lecturer is a nice guy and makes an effort to be entertaining but man his accent is thick. Perhaps it's just me, but there were times when he said 'apples' and I heard 'airport'. 'Surplus' is pronounced 'souploose'. When he runs through the problems in the lecturer and solves them to teach you the method, his math is much more complicated than it needs to be. It was a compulsory subject for me, but I would never choose it as an elective. The pass classes seem to contradict the teachings of the tutors, and it just ended up being a huge, confusing class to endure.

If you are lucky enough to do this course from semester 1, 2014 then you are in luck as Dr. Marco Faravelli is one of the best lecturers I've had and it is definitely the most well thought out course so far. The lecturer is amazing, the lectures themselves are great, the tutorials are exactly what you need and follow the course content perfectly.
There are no trick questions in exams, if you study hard you will be rewarded which is a nice difference from some courses where no matter how hard you study they just want to trip you up. A great course in every aspect.

This course mostly focused on the effects of the current account on it's ability to finance Australia's monetary policy, agricultural resources and nominal inflation.
Everything is important to go to, except pass classes.
This is good in teaching you maths and algebra in economics

Not a bad course, a little slow at times but does a good job of covering the basics. Beware of the assessment, only a mid-sem and a final.

Pretty interesting course. Good introduction to microeconomics, although it would have been nice if the lecturer kept his political views private. Getting told that not having a carbon tax would mean that we would have acid rain was probably one of the most hilarious things I've ever heard a lecturer say in my life.
Apart from that the course was interesting, the textbook was expensive but provided all the knowledge you need to succeed in the course.

I had James Laurenceson for this course, and he has to be the best lecturer at UQ. This course is a great introduction to not only economics, but also UQ and uni in general.
This is one of the most popular courses at UQ and the lectures will surely be full every time. You learn a lot about the power of knowledge and information, plus some economics stuff.
James did a great job.
