NOTE: I took this course in Semester 1 - 2018 but there was no option.
First up, Liza O'Moore is a VERY good lecturer who gets the information across perfectly. The statics section of the course is clearly set out and definitely gets the required information across. Attending all your classes and printing off the worked example sheets should definitely get you doing well on the mid-sem.
Then we come to the dynamics, I had Prof. Smart. Watch out for dynamics people, statics feels like a recap of high school physics with regards to the maths. Dynamics, however, will require Maths C level understanding and will be diving right into calculus. Contact sessions are pretty much useless (for dynamics), you show up, questions are on the projector you stare at it wondering how the hell to approach it considering the content taught in lectures feels both irrelevant and overly convoluted. Did I mention those questions are assessed?
So yeah, the statics part was a highlight of first year engineering. The dynamics part had me studying for many hours on campus until late only to realise that either 1. The method taught in lectures is horribly inefficient and the question can be done much faster or 2. You haven't gotten anywhere after studying for 4 hours straight.
For the final exam, I got 75% on the statics part with literally 1 hour of study (this was because the information taught in the statics lectures and contacts was communicated effectively) but I only got the 50% hurdle for dynamics after a full week of study.
Beware, here be dynamics.

Statics - No, Dynamics - Worth a look
This course is awesome and fun, maybe because moderation of easy and hard parts. Statics is very easy and doesn't require any maths above math's b. Honestly the hardest thing you might see is Sim Sol of 3 different unknowns. 3D Moments can be difficult to wrap your head around. Other than that statics is fairly simple. Lectures are compulsory if you want to pass because there are no lecture notes for statics. I had Professor Kitipornchai, who made this course enjoyable.
Dynamics is harder and it feels like a lot of content jam packed into a small amount of time. Having Professor Smart who put all lecture notes online tempts you to not attend lectures but it is important to keep going others you will start being lazy and leave everything to the last minute and trust you will be in trouble. Dynamics requires maths at a maths C level so don't attempt this course without maths C who you will scrap through if you have prayed enough. Thought there were lecture notes, it was difficult to study for Dynamics so I suggest getting a textbook for Dynamics only.
The pracs are useless, kinda helpful but useless and usually aren't timed right with the content learned which is annoying but unavoidable. Although the 4% given to attendance that could make the difference between two grade levels kinda makes it worth it.
Additionally you get problem sheets worth I believe 10%, these were so useful if you take them or your grading serious because it forces you to keep on track of your work and actually forces you to understand the concepts.
Semester 1 and Semester 2 are run very differently from each other. I favoured how the course was run this year semester 1 from semester 2 last year based on what I know happened last year. So for midsemester you get 80% of the Statics work and for the Final you get 20% of Statics and 100% of the Dynamics learnt. It seemed that Dr O'Moore (Statics Coordinator) left the easy questions for the final which relieved a lot of pressure for learning especially considering Dynamics is a really jam packed into the last bit of the course. Anything else about semester 2 I don't really know about.
It was noted that 2015 sem 1 the final exam especially maybe exclusively the dynamics section was much easier than last years sem 2 which was brilliant but necessary. The Dynamics section for some of the past exams were very difficult to the point that they were unreasonable and had way too many questions in them to the point that it's just scary. Fail rate must have been really high for this course in previous years because some of these questions were something that required very complex thinking which you only had just above 3 mins to do.

IF you are unfortunate enough to have dilum fernando as a lecturer, I strongly advise you take this course in the next semester. He does not respond to email and god forbid you ask a question in discussion board. You'll also have to attend his lectures as he likes to pause recordings to advantage those who attend and penalize those who did not. This is usually followed by a "to those at home, good luck to you".
My advice in this course is to only study the hardest examples you can find because no easy questions will be asked. The assessments are also 100% multiple choice which means no part marks. 15 questions fr dynamics and 15 questions for statics combined with a minimum compulsory passing grade (50%) as a requirement in both components to pass the course is a tough hurdle in multiple choice.
This course is definitely one of the hardest courses I've done at UQ with respect to passing requirements.its common for people to repeat this course 2 or 3 times and even to fail by half a mark. It's also possible to score 75% overall and still fail by not getting a passing grade on either one of dynamics or statics.
Regarding resources, very very few worked examples are provided and if you have dilum, he will not provide worked solutions to lecture problems or contact problems. My advice is to look for online videos and online worked solutions for every single topic.

Now I'm only writing this review to kind of counteract the negative review that was extremely cringe worthy to read. For me ENGG1400 was enjoyable, sure I didn't go to lectures, didn't buy the textbook and did my assignments the night before they were due, but all in all it was kind of fun when it came down to studying. I know that sounds even gayer than the guy who wrote the review before me but ENGG1400 wasn't that bad of a subject. I barely knew any of the course content a week before the statics exam (mid sem) and the dynamics exam (final). I purely studied my ass off for a week for both respective exams and did really well, showing that you don't have to be a nerd and attend every lecture or even contacts for that matter. Just study enough, study past exams for not just 1400 but ENGG1010 as well (what 1400 used to be) and you'll do fine. Don't listen to dickheads who bag out the subject purely cause they don't like one of the lecturers, who wasn't even that bad. ANyways I liked 1400 :) peace out

The title "Statics & Dynamics" roughly means "Things that either move or don't move", which should give you an idea of just how vacuous and unpleasant this course is.
Both sections follow a doltish formula; spend one week introducing extremely basic concepts (Newton's laws for statics, basic calculus for dynamics), then spend several weeks making their use as tedious and unfruitful as possible. Mastered basic trusses? Great! Now you move on to slightly larger trusses! You'd better goddamn love trusses, let me tell you right now.
It would be like a Batman movie introducing Bruce Wayne and showing his parents' death... then, rather than quickly segue to his BDSM-esque costume, pack-of-cigarettes-per-day growl, and ridiculous acrobatics, instead chose to show him spending several years in counselling, grappling with orphanhood and abandonment issues. Yeah, we get he's hurt, but do we *really* need to relive that painful experience with him over and over again?
Similarly, the extreme dearth of new content renders lectures a one-hour viewing session of the lecturer working through problem sets. Depending on the staff member, this might be bearable, or might consist of a monotone ramble punctuated by rectifying frequent errors or shouting at students for minor infractions. In some ways, one of my lecturers was literally worse than Hitler; at least the Fuhrer could speak engagingly.
I have never, until now, wanted to fight a lecturer.
The statics laboratories are like an empty ice cream cone - simple, pointless, and crunchy. The dynamics laboratories more like a half full ice cream cone - still deeply unsatisfying on reflection, but compared to the empty ice cream cone you were presented earlier, temporarily gratifying. Also, you picked lemon sorbet (good choice), and it's leaked through into a cheap waffle cone (unfortunate), making the experience slowly more unpleasant and soggy as it progresses.
I don't think that analogy worked well, but that's okay - neither did this course.
The answers to your statics assignments can be found in a textbook solution manual. I didn't bother to look for dynamics solutions - if you know intro calculus and play along with the childish problem solving template they enforce, you'll be fine (like Batman's parents would've been if he could stomach some goddamn theatre, but that's neither here nor there).
Your midsemester is multiple choice, and easy to fluke (in a curiously meta fashion). The final exam should be easy enough if you don't shoot yourself halfway through (or, if you're a clearer thinker, anybody who prevents you from leaving the exam hall).
ENGG1400 is, by far, the single worst educational experience I have ever had, and many on the student Facebook page seem to feel the same. If you don't want to be a civil engineer, don't take this course. If you want to be a civil engineer, take this course, regret it deeply, and choose another career... maybe fighting crime in the streets of Gotham?

This course covers an excellent range of statics and dynamics problems in the form of real life examples and mathematical calculations. It is very thorough as far as the course content and exam expectations are concerned, and it was an absolute privilege to learn from the experienced lecturers. I felt adequately challenged as we were exposed to course work which related directly to real scenarios of problem solving within a career as a civil engineer. Of all of the engineering subjects at UQ, to me this one is most memorable for the enjoyment and new learning that I experienced.
