INFS3202 – Web Information Systems 24.4

Honestly, the only good thing about this course is the project where you make your own website out of a few given topics.
You self learn more than you learn in via the lectures, which is kind of a good thing and a bad thing. (good because you get the knowledge of self-learning, bad because you will be paying a lot to learn something that you can probably do for free via online courses).
We mostly used Codeigniter (framework for PHP) but had option to use any other for the project.
The staff wasn't incredibly helpful or responsive on the piazza forum where we asked questions. Pracs were mostly useless because the tutors can't look at our code to change it at all and a big waste of time as one tutor can't help more than 25 students within 2 hours time.
My suggestion - if it is not compulsory, don't take it. Rather just pick up a random project for yourself like a making a blog website or something similar to learn the backend and database.

INFS3202 – Web Information Systems 28.7

The project is good.

That's it.

The material taught is incredibly basic. I didn't use a single thing I learned in lectures to make my project. I stopped attending lectures because of how bad they were.

They will try to teach you php and filezilla and basically a ton of really old web development principles and languages. There was one lecture that covered modern frameworks and dev ops but it was taught by a guest speaker and wasnt even tested on the exams.

For the $1000 this course taught I learnt very very very little through its learning materials. You're better off reading w3schools for a few hours or watching the millions of youtube tutorials that are far better at teaching the content of this course than the lectureres.

The project was good though, you get to make whatever you want using whatever language you want as long as it is somehow a web information system. You will learn far far far more making that project then you ever will with the lecture content. Also, having a project that you made is great for your resume.

All in all. If you're looking for an excuse to make some kind of cool webapp, this course is an excellent $1000 excuse. However if you want to actually learn things that are harder to teach yourself and don't have a billion amazing tutorials online, then look elsewhere.
