JOUR2711 – Principles of Editing and Design 97.3

This was a very valuable subject. The assignments gave me a real feel for news writing and editing. The first assignment involved editing a newspaper page layout in InDesign. This was such a hands-on task, as there was a deadline akin to a media organisation, I used editing skills I had been taught in lecturers and tutorials, and used a program that I would come across again in my career. The other assignments opened my eyes to using news value to address different audiences. It also introduced me to digital re-packaging. I have re-used the learnt skills and I feel more industry prepared.

I would definitely recommend this course. I have been able to put these new-found skills on my resume, and it has improved my theoretical editing knowledge, and allowed me to develop some practical editing skills.

Brad Turner was a great lecturer, he has a wealth of knowledge that he was more than happy to share. His style of teaching made it an enjoyable subject and his delivery method made the information quite retainable. He organised guest lecturers that really added to the course learning, and if at any stage I was confused, he was more than happy to help me out and made sure I was always on the right track. He always posted useful, relevant (and sometimes entertaining!) nuggets of knowledge and information on blackboard that helped my learning. Kudos!
