KORN1010 – Spoken Korean IA 73.7

I took both written (KORN1011) and spoken Korean (KORN1010) this semester, and, although I found the assessment for KORN1011 to be more straightforward and easier to study for, KORN1010 assessment was marked less harshly and required less understanding.

ASSESSMENT:
Vocab test (20%): A very simple vocab test which really only requires you to translate beginner vocabulary learnt in first few weeks from Korean to English and vice versa. A helpful exam template is given for each exam to let you know which kinds of questions are expected.

Speaking presentation (20%): A 3 minute prepared dialogue with a partner. This was quite easy as you could speak about anything as long as it incorporated some learnt structures. The on-the-spot questions asked after the presentation is the most difficult part, but they are relatively simple - e.g. what nationality are you, what year are you in etc.

Listening Test (20%): The KORN1010 listening test is extremely easy compared to the KORN1011 listening test. The recordings are played super slow and repeated 2-3 times so as long as the vocab and structures are memorized, it's not hard to pick up what they are saying.

Final Oral Presentation (40%): This is probably the most nerve-wracking assessment piece as you're on your own this time. It involves presenting a script and answering questions afterwards. I found this easier than the previous oral presentation as, although this one is longer and not done with a partner, the questions are given to you beforehand, and the lecturer only picks a few to ask you.

For perspective, I got 7s for all the assessment items and my lowest grade was the partner oral presentation. I feel like this is achievable for everyone with minimal study- just make sure you go through some vocab flashcards 2 or 3 times a week to keep the content fresh.

Yes - they explain the structures and you can practise your pronunciation

Is the textbook necessary?

No - They give you textbook photocopies each lesson but I think investing in textbook is better than ending up with 100 handouts that you won\'t be able to find when it comes time to revise

KORN1010 – Spoken Korean IA 91.7

Out of spoken and written Korean, I found the assessment for spoken much easier than written. The lecturer, Ken Park, shows youtube videos (like eatyourkimchi and talktomeinkorean) to end lectures which is helpful to see glimpses of Korean culture, language, etc. Ken Park and the tutors are extremely helpful and encouraging; even during oral exams, they will help you correct your mistakes or provide an alternative way to say something.

The assessment is pretty easy considering it’s two vocabulary tests, a listening test and two oral exams. I think personally, the only challenging thing about the assessment is the oral exams. The final oral exam is a speech and you will be asked numerous questions to answer in Korean (even though it says you will be asked 2-3 questions only). The oral exam before that is much easier since you will be with a friend and it's pretty much the same structure.

In my personal opinion, I think this is an easy course to do if you put the effort in. People who are interested in anything Korean or Korea itself or if you want to learn a language as an elective, I definitely recommend this course.
