LATN2230 – Latin Language & Literature 1 54.7

A truly mind numbing amount of work is required to keep up, the small class format makes it very inflexible and often difficult to fit into your time table. Mind meltingly boring.

LATN2230 – Latin Language & Literature 1 97.5

This is the third semester of a progressive latin reading and translation course. Fortunately, they have decided not to cram too much into this semester and it was much easier to keep up with all the new grammar, paradigms and vocabulary while continuing to revise and keep in mind everything learnt in the previous 2 semesters. The course is well-structured and what it required each week is clearly communicated in terms of sections of the book (for grammar and vocabulary and translations that you need to prepare. This semester Caillan has begun informing the class and useful sections of the book to revise before the upcoming class which has been very helpful. Be prepared as Caillan will call you on to share your translation with the class and will coach you through it if you haven't done it. Like all language classes, be prepared to do about 2 courses worth of study outside of class to keep up. The UQlatin website is less helpful at this stage (translations are pretty ordinary) but still good to use. Assessment is mostly exams spread throughout the semester with only 1 assignment, unlike previous courses which are weighted more heavily on assignments. Small class of under 20 people and really helpful lecturer so lots of personal attention. Really great if you like problem-solving and code breaking.
