MECH4500 – Engineering Thesis 22.0

Hal Gurgenci and his student HUGH RUSSELL

I just write this review to say that having a good supervisor is really really important to execute your work since it is a one-year course

I went to Hal once December last year and asked him if he had any projects available.
He defined a project for me and I started in January (a bit earlier)
but to my surprise, he handed over the project to a research Officer named HUGH RUSSEL when semester commenced in February.
Needless to say, that HUGH RUSSELL just holds a Master degree and even not studying for PHD. - totally illiterate.
This guy was terrible. I am sure He didn't know what he was doing at all.
During the semester, every time I showed him my work, he just said that all my formulation is wrong and couldn't tell me why, though finally I understood that I was right.
In one occasion he saw my work, didn’t say anything, because there was one other student attended the meeting. When I left, he emailed me to take a photo of my working and send it to him, after 5 minutes he replied that I had a UNIT CONVERSION error which was JOULES and when I recheck I found I am right but HUGH was wrong.
Can anyone believe he didn’t know the unit of JOULES?
His personal and communication skills are also awful. when he talks to you, he just looks at the ceiling or out from the window and never look at your face or eyes - purely suffering from chronic self-confidence.

On the whole MECH4500 was a nightmare for me with this genius.

So, if you want to pick up a project with HUGH RUSELL, just watch out.
Also, beware that Hal Gurgenci doesn't sell this guy to you for a project.
Because when the project is set, The UQ doesn't support you at all to change your supervisor. I complained so many times during the semester, that this guy is a piece of ..., but no one listened. I talked to all the Mech advisors, but no outcome.

Everything I just said is just documented via emails or other forms, because he didn't like to be recorded on Zoom.
Can you believe he got mad at me when I was recording him. Also, that was once and the last time.

The University of Queensland can contact me to verify the information but please don’t delete them.
