Starting with the positive Surya is very enthusiastic and obviously loves the work that he is in, he is nice to talk to and is more than willing to help. He is understanding when it comes to unclear assignments, marking criteria etc but this is mainly due to the fact that he butchers the assignment and criteria details in the first place. He always wants people to pass and will do everything in his power to do so, both of these courses are almost impossible to fail but in order to do well you have to put A LOT of time into them. The downside to Surya is his teaching methods are outdated and conform to an American style leaving a lot of independent learning and studying, any question asked are always answered in a vague way and the information presented is loosely connected (it may be connected but he portrays it in a way that seems like nothing connects to one another). EVERYTHING IS LATE, every assignments, every piece of assessment is always distributed late, due dates are changed on the fly, assignment specification are changed regularly even DURING the assignment. in METR4202 2 years in a row the last projected continued over into SWOTVAC due to poor time management from Surya leaving a lot of stressed student. Overall easy to pass, hard to do well, confusing lectures; however, most of the lectures are useless in METR4202 not so much ELEC3004.
The material was delivered in an interesting manner and inspired me to undertake greater independent learning. Surya and his tutors were very approachable and gave relevant guidance. To improve, I would suggest a more definitive time frame of assessment schedule.
The class is challenging and engaging. It's hard. However, the outcomes can be spectacular. This course is known as a start-up maker (two companies have been founded from its projects). It has a considerable amount of material and thus requires self-directed study. It's not the type of course for those who expect to be spoon-fed.
Is interested in helping and creating understanding, he clearly wants to assist, however his rambling and constantly undirected method of talking about any topic makes it difficult to get any long lasting understanding from anything he says. He also seems to be releasing assignments at nearly random intervals, rarely sticking to any release date or submission date making it very difficult to know when an assignment will be available, also requiring assignments to be corrected later on due to errors.
He is also a very nice person, I greatly enjoyed what time I spoke to him 1 - 1 and information was much more clear in this format.
